The ideal monitor viewing distance is the eye-to-screen gap that keeps text sharp, fits the whole display inside a comfortable field of view, and lets your eyes relax their focus — usually somewhere between 20 and 40 inches (50–100 cm). Unlike a TV, where the goal is cinematic immersion from across the room, a monitor is read for hours at close range, so legibility and posture matter more than filling your vision. Sit too close and your eyes strain to focus while your neck sweeps to reach the edges; sit too far and small text turns fuzzy.

How Monitor Distance Is Worked Out

Start from arm's length

Optometry and OSHA guidance put the healthy minimum at about 20 inches (50 cm) — roughly an arm's length. The calculator never recommends closer than that, then scales up with screen size so a larger panel sits a little farther back.

Scale with the panel

Bigger screens need more distance so the edges stay inside easy eye movement. A 24-inch monitor is happy around 24–28 inches away; a 32-inch panel wants 32–40 inches. The recommendation grows roughly in step with the diagonal.

Adjust for the task

Recommended distance

D = max(20 in, diagonal × usage factor)

An arm's-length floor of 20 inches, scaled by the diagonal and a task factor (1.0 for coding up to 1.2 for video editing).

Field of view

FOV° = 2 × arctan( width ÷ (2 × D) )

The horizontal angle the screen subtends. A desktop monitor filling roughly 40–55° feels immersive without forcing neck movement.

Pixel sharpness

PPD = horizontal pixels ÷ FOV°

Pixels per degree. Around 60 PPD looks 'retina' sharp; below ~30 the grid shows. Higher resolution lets you sit closer.

Key Concepts for Monitor Placement

Eye-to-screen distance

The straight-line gap from your eyes to the panel. The 20-inch minimum exists because focusing closer for long periods strains the ciliary muscles and worsens digital eye fatigue.

Pixels per degree (PPD)

How many pixels pack into one degree of your vision. It rises with resolution and distance and falls with screen width. It's the honest measure of perceived sharpness — not raw resolution alone.

Field of view

The angular width the screen fills. Too narrow wastes the immersion of a big panel; too wide forces constant head turning. Ultrawides trade a wider FOV for the need to swivel slightly.

The 20-20-20 rule

Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Correct distance helps, but periodic distance focus is what truly resets tired eyes.

Monitor Distance Best Practices

  • Keep the top of the screen at or just below eye level so your gaze tilts slightly down — the natural resting angle for the eyes and neck.
  • Stay at least an arm's length away and increase the distance for larger panels rather than scooting in to read.
  • Match resolution to distance — if text looks soft at a comfortable distance, you need a higher-resolution panel, not a closer chair.
  • Reduce glare before reducing distance — poor lighting causes more squinting and leaning-in than a slightly far monitor ever will.

Sitting too close to a big panel

A 32-inch monitor at laptop distance forces constant eye and neck movement to track the edges. Push it back to roughly its diagonal in inches.

Chasing resolution you can't see

From a normal desk distance the gain from 4K on a 24-inch panel is marginal — the pixels are already below your acuity limit at 1080p. Spend on size or panel quality instead.

Mounting the screen too high

A monitor perched above eye level tips your head back and strains the neck. The top edge should sit at or just under your eye line.

Ignoring desk depth

A shallow desk can force the monitor closer than is comfortable. A monitor arm that pushes the panel back over the desk edge recovers the distance.
