The best gaming screen distance balances two competing goals: seeing the entire frame fast enough to react, and filling enough of your vision to feel immersed. For competitive play you want the whole screen inside your central field so your eyes barely move to spot enemies; for cinematic single-player games you want the image to wrap around you. Where you land depends on whether you game on a PC monitor at a desk or a console on a TV across the room, plus your screen size, resolution, and genre.

How Gaming Distance Is Calculated
Split PC from console
A PC monitor is read at a desk, so the baseline is arm's-length distance scaled by size; a console feeds a TV across the room, so the baseline is a diagonal multiple. The platform selector switches between the two models.
Weight by genre
Competitive shooters and racing sims favour a slightly closer, wider view for faster reads; RPGs and casual games favour a relaxed distance for long, comfortable sessions. The game-type selector nudges the distance accordingly.
Protect reaction time

Desk distance floored at an arm's length and scaled by genre — competitive sits a touch closer, casual a touch farther.
Console baseline
D = diagonal × 1.4 × genre factor
Living-room distance from the TV diagonal, slightly closer than a movie-watching distance to keep the action in central vision.
Field of view
FOV° = 2 × arctan( width ÷ (2 × D) )
Gaming feels best around 33–55°: wide enough for immersion, contained enough that you don't lose track of the edges.

Reaction time and eye travel
